HIFU - High Intensity Focused Ultrasound
What is a HIFU Facial?
HIFU uses Focused Ultrasound to target the layers of skin just below the surface. The ultrasound energy causes the tissue to heat up rapidly. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature, they experience cellular damage, which in turn stimulates the cells to produce more collagen. Collagen is the protein that give your skin its structure.
As the collagen increases, this results in firmer skin with fewer wrinkles. As the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there’s no damage to the upper layers of the skin and no immediate visible signs of treatment.
Can HIFU Replace Face Lifts?
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), HIFU and other nonsurgical alternatives to facelifts have seen a major increase in popularity over the last few years. The total number of procedures performed has increased almost 65 percent between 2012 and 2017.
‘Ultherapy’ or ‘Ultrasound Facelift’ has become one of the most popular treatments for the face and neck.

The history of HIFU
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new non-invasive cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that some consider and painless replacement for face lifts. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer and tauter skin.
HIFU is historically known for its use in treating cancer. The first reported use of HIFU for aesthetic use was in 2008.
HIFU was then approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration in the US) in 2009 for brow lifts. More recently in 2014, the device was also cleared by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline.
People were able to see results in a few months after treatment, without the risks associated with surgery. Several small clinical trials have found HIFU to be safe and effective for facial lifting and refining wrinkles. Results have been particularly good in younger patients who don’t want the risks and recovery time associated with surgery. HIFU won’t work as well for people with severe cases of sagging skin.
Who is best suited to this treatment?
HIFU may not be appropriate for everyone. The procedure works best on people older than 30 with mild-to-moderate skin laxity. People with sun damaged skin or a more loose skin may need multiple treatments before seeing results.
Who is not suitable for this treatment?
HIFU isn’t recommended for people with infections and open lesions at the target area, severe or cystic acne, and metallic implants in the treatment area.
HIFU for Face Procedure
You should remove all makeup and skin care products from the target area before treatment.
What to expect at your appointment:
-
The therapist would have had a consultation with you before treatment and explained the process.
-
The therapist clean the area to be treated.
-
They may apply a topical anesthetic cream before starting treatment.
-
Then applies an ultrasound gel.
-
The HIFU device is placed against your skin.
-
Ultrasound energy is then delivered to the target area in short pulses for roughly 30 to 90 minutes.
-
While the ultrasound energy is being applied, you might feel heat and tingling. You can take a pain medication if required, please ask.
-
You’re free to go home and resume your normal daily activities right away after the procedure.
To Summarise
HIFU is considered a very safe and effective noninvasive procedure for tightening the facial skin and reducing wrinkles.
Its key advantage over a surgical face lift are :
-
There are no incisions
-
No scarring
-
No required rest or recovery time.
-
HIFU is also more cost effective than a face lift.
-
Most people see full results around three months after their treatment.
If you’re looking for a treatment that is quick, painless, and noninvasive, HIFU is an excellent option compared to a surgical face lift. The procedure repeated in one to two years as the natural aging process takes over. If you’re a bit older with more skin sagging , HIFU may not be able to resolve all the skin issues.
HIFU FOR BODY CONTOURING
HIFU is a body skin tightening procedure that helps you lose those unwanted inches and remove stubborn pockets of fat that are a struggle to shift. Unlike laser treatments, the high intensity focused ultrasound technology (HIFU) can target deeper into the structural issues. It’s high frequency of ultra waves results in a rapid heating of the focal zone at 3 depths; 1.3cm, 9mm and 6mm under the skin. This targeted energy destroys fat cells and in turn firms and tightens the skin.
The damaged cells are then flushed from the body via a natural removal process that continues for up to 3 months. Supported by researchers in dermatology, the use of ultrasound is “efficacious for skin rejuvenation, body contouring, and reduction of cellulite of the face, décolletage, abdomen, and thighs”. HIFU treatments are highly effective in sculpturing and toning multiple problem areas of your body.
WHAT AREAS CAN HIFU TREAT?
✓ Abdomen
✓ Inner and outer things
✓ Hips
✓ Back
✓ Buttocks
✓ Inner arms
How does HIFU treatment work?
We will always ensure you are comfortable and relaxed prior to starting. Our aestheticians will clean the specified area to be treated and apply a clear gel. We then make use of a handheld device to transfer the ultrasound energy into the subcutaneous tissues of the specified area, distributing the energy evenly over the body. Once the area has been covered, the clear gel will be removed, and you will notice an instant lift.
How long does the treatment take and is it painful?
Treatment time will vary depending on the size of the treatment area. For each session, you can expect it to last no more than 30 to 90 minutes. Furthermore, the treatment is not pain free but the level of pain is completely tolerable and feels like tiny electric pulses, or a prickly sensation.
Results of HIFU
The results of HIFU treatment can be seen within 4 to 12 weeks as the body needs time to naturally process and remove the destroyed fat cells out of the body*. For maintenance we suggest 1 to 2 yearly top ups. With HIFU, you will also benefit from:
-
Smoother skin texture
-
Reduced appearance of cellulite
-
Firming and tightening of skin
-
Reduction of fat cells
HIFU FOR BODY CONTOURING
Ultrasound technology is completely safe and is used for a variety of clinical treatments. In just one treatment, you can expect to see an average reduction of up to 1 inch from the treatment area.
Which parts of the body is the treatment most effective in?
HIFU is ideal for abdomen fat, body contouring post pregnancy tummy, excess fat on your arms (also known as bingo wings), bingo wings, thighs and under the buttocks, for a non-surgical bum lifting effect.
